Red Saraca Tree
Saraca declinata
Lovely medium sized tree with open crown. New growth is flushed with purple and hands down like a handkerchief. Flowers several times a year with large clusters of reddish flowers from branches This saraca tree is a nectar feeders paradise. It attracts a wide range of butterflies (including Ulysses and Cairns Birdwing) as well as nectar feeding birds.
In Asia Saracas are called "The Sorrowless Tree" as Buddha was believed to be born under one.
Saracas are nitrogen fixing trees, making them a valuable part of a good strong garden ecposystem.

Growing Conditions | Well drained rich soil. The saraca prefers a protected part shade environment when small. Can handle a coastal subtropical climate in good conditions. S, declinata tends to be a slower grower. |
