Variegated Shampoo Ginger
Zingiber zerumbet "Darceyi"
Although variegated Shampoo Ginger is deciduous, it is very a solide performer in coastal tropical gardens all the way down to Sydney. Unlike other beehive gingers the foliage only grows to about a meter. The green and white leaves add a splash of colr to borders or beds or they can be mass planted. The small red pinecone flowers are produced in summer and are suitable as cut flowers. The flowers and foliage have a gingery ssent when brushed. In Hawaii the flowers are squeezed to release a gel like substance that can be used to wash your hair.
