Curcuma Gingers
Curcumas are a deciduous group of gingers predominantly from SE Asia, the Indian Himalayas and Southern China. However one of the most beautiful and widely cultivated Curcuma australasica is native to northern Australia. The large purplish pink flowers arrive before the foliage making it one of the most striking displays of the tropical flower world.
A number of curcumas also have beautiful foliage .
While many curcumas are grown as ornamentals they are also grown medicinally and for food. Some like curcuma longa are both beautiful and edible. Curcumas are surprisingly cold hardy partially due to their deciduous nature. It is particularly important not to over water when they are dormant as they can rot.
We strongly recommend them for tropical style gardens in cooler climates.
